Grading & Site Preparation

A finished site starts with the dirt. EMC clears, shapes and stabilizes the ground so building pads, pavements and landscaping are built on level, well-drained, properly compacted subgrade — the foundation everything else depends on.

Where the Project Begins

Getting the Ground Right — Before Anyone Pours or Paves

Grading is the discipline of moving earth to precise elevations and slopes so water drains where it should and structures sit on stable ground.

EMC handles the full progression: opening the site, stripping and stockpiling topsoil, moving material to rough grade, and refining to the tight tolerances that finished paving and concrete demand. Along the way we build in the drainage falls, aggregate base and compaction that keep a site performing for years — not just at ribbon-cutting.

Because we also self-perform excavation, utilities, concrete and asphalt, our grading crews understand exactly what the next trade needs. Subgrade is handed off ready to build on, not ready to be reworked.

How a Site Takes Shape

From Raw Ground to Ready-to-Build Subgrade

Grading follows a sequence. Skipping steps shows up later as ponding, settlement or failed pavement — so we work the ground in order.

Clear & Strip

Remove vegetation, roots and debris, then strip and stockpile topsoil for later reuse in landscaped areas.

Rough Grade

Move material to bring the site near design elevations, balancing cut and fill and establishing the primary drainage pattern.

Compact & Proofroll

Place and compact fill in controlled lifts, then coordinate proofrolling so soft spots are found and corrected before base goes down.

Base & Fine Grade

Install and shape aggregate base, then fine-grade to the tolerances that pavement and flatwork require.

Set the Drainage

Cut swales, tie in falls and confirm positive drainage so water leaves the site instead of pooling on it.

Hand Off Ready

Deliver clean, stable, on-grade subgrade to the paving, concrete or landscaping crews that follow.

Drainage Is Designed In, Not Added Later

Grade for Water First — Everything Else Follows

Most pavement and foundation problems trace back to water that had nowhere to go. Our grading builds the drainage in from the start: consistent slopes, shaped swales, corrected low spots and subgrade that sheds water instead of holding it.

  • Positive slope away from structures
  • Swales & drainage channels
  • Low-spot & ponding corrections
  • Erosion-prone slope shaping
  • Coordination with storm systems
  • Site stabilization & seeding prep
