Underground Utilities
Underground Utilities
EMC installs the water, sewer and storm systems that make a site work — for general contractors, municipalities, developers and utility owners who need the underground done right and documented.
Built for Owners & Contractors
The Systems Beneath the Surface
Underground utilities are unforgiving work — installed to grade, bedded correctly, tested and buried where no one sees them again for decades.
EMC installs pressure and gravity systems for public and private owners: potable water, fire service, sanitary sewer and storm drainage, along with the structures, services and crossings that tie them together. We work from the utility plans and applicable specifications, coordinate locates and existing-utility conflicts up front, and stage the work so bedding, backfill, compaction and testing all happen in the right order. Because we also self-perform excavation and restoration, the trench, the pipe and the surface repair can all come from one accountable contractor.
Systems We Install
Wet & Dry Utility Systems
Pressure and gravity systems, structures and the trench work that supports them.
Water Mains & Services
Distribution mains plus water-service lines, valves, hydrants and fittings, installed and tied in to the utility owner's requirements.
Learn more →Sanitary Sewer
Gravity sewer mains and laterals set to line and grade, with manholes and cleanouts placed per plan.
Learn more →Storm Drainage
Storm piping, catch basins, manholes, culverts and drainage structures that carry runoff off the site.
Learn more →Fire Service Lines
Fire-service lines run from the main to the building, coordinated with the water system and the owner's requirements.
Learn more →Electrical Conduit & Duct Bank
Trenching, conduit and duct-bank installation for dry-utility runs, coordinated with the trades that pull and terminate.
Learn more →Utility Repairs & Tie-Ins
Utility repairs, replacements and relocations, plus tie-ins to existing systems that clear conflicts with new work.

Installation Process
A disciplined sequence keeps the pipe protected and the surface restorable.
Locate & Layout
Coordinate utility locates, verify existing-utility conflicts and lay out the run to line and grade from the plans.
Trench & Shoring/Box
Open the trench and set protective systems — trench box or shoring — with spoil managed clear of the excavation.
Bedding & Pipe Installation
Place bedding, set carrier pipe and structures to line and grade, and make the joints and connections per spec.
Testing
Coordinate pressure, leakage and other required testing with the owner, engineer and inspectors before covering.
Backfill, Compaction & Restoration
Backfill in controlled lifts, compact to requirements and restore the surface above the completed run.
Verified Before It's Covered
Testing & Inspection Coordination
The underground is full of things you can't see, so we build in the testing and inspection the owner requires before anything gets buried. We coordinate the setups, schedule the witnesses and support the documentation that closes each segment out.
- Pressure & leakage testing
- CCTV or mandrel checks where required
- Compaction & density testing
- Coordination with the owner
- Engineer & inspector scheduling
- Documentation & as-built support
Protecting the Crew & the Site
Safety & Restoration
The excavation is opened safely and the site is put back the way it should be.
Trench & Excavation Safety
The open trench is the most hazardous part of utility work, so it gets planned before the first bucket of dirt comes out.
- Job-hazard analysis for the excavation
- Utility locating & conflict verification
- Protective systems — trench box or shoring
- Spoil management clear of the trench
Site Restoration
Once the pipe is in and tested, the surface is restored so the finished site shows no sign of the trench beneath it.
- Backfill & compaction in controlled lifts
- Pavement & curb restoration
- Seeding & stabilization
- Cleanup & final site condition
